A Coruña

A CorunaLocated in the most north-westerly point of the Iberian peninsula, A Coruña has the largest population in Galicia after Vigo.

Bathed by the waters of the Atlantic ocean A Coruña is a city open to the sea. It has an important port and beautiful beaches nearby which on sunny days attract many tourists.

The best way to discover the city is on foot. The recently built promenade is an excellent option for a stroll of nearly 9km (13km when it is finished). Skirting the town it offers the tourist wonderful scenery ,on the one hand the wild sea and on the other hand the bustling city.

While strolling along we will see some places of interest like: “La Casa del Hombre” ( Domus),which is an interactive museum about the human being, “La Casa de los Peces” an aquarium of regional marine fauna and also species from other latitudes like seals and tropical species, the world famous “La Torre de Hércules” the oldest Roman lighthouse in the world, dating from the II century.Torre de Hercules

One of the major attractions of the city is the lovely “Santa Margarita“park where one can relax or go for a stroll. The Planetarium is also housed here.

The old part of the city, with buildings of exceptional beauty, is also worth a visit. The Town Hall is in Maria Pita square. Santiago church is the oldest in Coruña dating from the XII century, one of the major features being the three Romanesque aspes. “El Castillo de San Antón” is a fort built in the XII century it was intended to protect the fort but later it was converted into a prison,it now houses the archaeological museum.

A Coruña has a lot to offer and is a good base for exploring nearby areas.

Beaches

There are 8 beaches in Coruña, two of them are in the centre; Riazor and Orza are the largest and the most popular, but if you are looking for a more peaceful beach “Lapas” is just beside “La Torre de Hércules”.
San Amaro” has a tranquil and friendly atmosphere. If you are travelling with children “Matadero” beach is also recommended as it is in the centre of the town and has the calmest sea of them all.
