More than 300km of coastline make space for hundreds of beautiful beaches, some set in unique landscapes and almost untouched by human hand.
Right in the centre of Asturias is its main town; Oviedo (pop: 200.000), well connected with the rest of region. Until a few decades ago Asturias was one of the most remote areas in Spain lacking good communications, this has helped keep it more or less free from excessive environment degradation, thus, it still retains the charm of old Spain but with new facilities and communications.
A small international airport (Asturias Airport) is located 14km west of the town of Avilés.
Although Oviedo and other towns in the area offer good attractions to visitors and travellers, the best of Asturias is beyond the cities. Asturias is green and beautiful, fields span from the mountains right to the sea cliffs. More than 30% of Asturias is under some sort of protection, there are hundreds of walks and treks all over Asturias even near the main cities. If you are interested in trekking check out Picos de Europa National Park or Somiedo area.
A trip to visit small fishing villages like Cudillero or Llanes is highly reccommended
You will find great eating experiences in Asturias, Fabada (bean stew) is the typical dish and locally made cider is the drink you must try, to find out more visit the Asturian Food & Drink section.
Asturias is closely related to its neighbours Galicia on the west and Cantabria on the east
