Covadonga Lakes

Lake Enol Covadonga LakesThere are two beautiful lakes in the Covadonga area, in Picos de Europa National Park, both from glacier origin:

Lake Enol. Just a few kilometres further up from the Basilica, it has a depth of 24m and

Lake Ercina. A little further on, at a height of 1,100m, 2m deep larger in size and with more vegetation than lake Enol.

Make note that swimming in the lakes is not allowed.

In low season it is possible to get to the lakes by own vehicle, but probably in the near future this will not be allowed in order to keep the area as clean and pristine as possible. A shuttle service is already in operation during summer months to take people up to the lakes.Lake Ercina

There are some lovely walks near the lakes suitable for all types of walkers and if you want to stock up on your food supplies there are a couple of hut-bars nearby which sell snacks and drinks.

Very near Lake Encina there is a magnificent example of a Limestone pavement, a typical karstic formation, that seems to appear from nowhere.

How to get there

4km east of Cangas de Onís along the AS-144 there is a roundabout, once you arrive here, take the AS-262 signposted to Covadonga .Just before you get to the Basilica take the narrow road going up and signposted “Lagos”.

Note: it is advisable to drive slowly and carefully because sometimes stray cattle wander onto the road.
