Lugo
Lugo, dates back to the 1st century AD. and has a population of approx. 100,000.
There are still signs of Roman origins, like the Hot Springs and the Roman Wall, which was built 16 centuries ago.
The Roman Wall
The Roman wall, dating back to the 3rd century, has been proclaimed World Heritage and is one of the most important attractions in the area.It is the best preserved legacy of defence of ancient Roman Spain.It is approx. 2km in circumference and completely encircles the old part of the city.
There are stairs which lead to the top of the wall so visitors can stroll along and admire the spectacular views of the city.
There are 10 gates which lead to a pedestrian area in the old quarter where there are plenty of restaurants where one can savour Galician gastronomy.
The Cathedral
Lugo cathedral was begun at the beginning of the 12th century and was not completed until the 17th century so there are many different styles of architecture:Romanesque – Gothic style.The main façade is Neo-classical.The chapels and the ambulatory were added in the 17th century .
Provincial Museum
The “Convento de San Francisco” is now the provincial museum, and is a wonderful example of medieval architecture.There is a collection of archelogical pieces: gold and silver relics, mosaics from Roman times and a whole room dedicated to “Sargadelos” (Galician )pottery. And also paintings dating from the 15th century.
Roman Baths
On the banks of the river Miño and taking advantage of the medicinal waters the Romans set up the baths.The waters can reach a temperature of 43º centigrade.The remains are on the ground floor of the Hotel “ Balneario de Lugo” and can be visited
by getting in touch with the reception at the hotel.
