Some advice if you are planning to do the Camino de Santiago
Go to Camino de Santiago
- Get a good guide book which recommends accommodation, somewhere to eat, and places of interest.A detailed map is also an excellent idea
- Before you begin the route it is a good idea to go on long walks so that your feet and legs get used to long hours of activity. If you are not in top form physically it is best to do the first stages slowly for example two stages in three days.
- Get in contact with the nearest or the most interesting “Camino de Santiago” association. They will be able to give you all kind of information including how to get the pilgrim credentials.
- Use suitable and comfortable footwear.
- It is not advisable to take pets.They are not allowed to stay in the refuges or hostels.
- Take a small first aid kit which should include iodine or any other disinfectant, elastoplasts, aspirin and paracetamol.
- Make sure you close all gates when walking through fields so that cattle can not escape and cause damage or accidents if they wander onto the road.
- Do not regard this pilgrimage as a competition, just delight in the scenery, the people you meet and the places you visit. It is not essential to be a believer to be able to enjoy this unsurpassable experience.
- Do not leave rubbish along the way. Take it with you until you find a bin where you can put it in.
- If you see anything abnormal along the route, for example a broken sign, inform people about it when you reach the refuge.
- As you will more than likely be sharing a room it might be advisable to take earplugs and even a mask for your eyes.
- In most of the refuges there are only basic facilities,but there is usually a kitchen which provides utensils and the possibility to prepare your own food.
- Drink plenty of water, even though you are not thirsty.You can easily become dehydrated especially when it is very hot.
- It is wise to take a waterproof to cover your backpack as well as waterproofs for yourself you never know when there could be a downpour.
