Vigo Estuary
Vigo estuary is in Pontevedra province on the southern coast of Galicia. On entering the estuary the beautiful Cíes islands can be seen. Here are some interesting places near the estuary:
Moaña
This is a marine town there are more than 20kms of beaches in this district. There are several monuments worth a visit for example the “Dolmen de Chan de Arquiña”, some megalithic remains, fragments of ceramics dating from 2,200 B.C. have been found inside. Not too far from here we can admire the spectacular scenery from a vantage point on “Monte faro de Domaio“
For those who are interested in rambling we recommend “Rio da Fraga”. This path is about 6kms and follows the course of the river. Along the way, as well as admiring the magnificent landscape forever green, about 30 old fully restored watermills can be seen.
Since 1984 there has been a Celtic festival at the end of July in Morrazo. Musicians from Brittany, Portugal, Wales, Scotland, Ireland and of course Galicia and Asturias are regular players.
Bayona ( Baiona )
Bayona was the first European port to hear the news of the discovery of America. On March 1st 1493 the ship arrived here so since then this is commemorated on the first weekend in March. There is a replica of the ship in one of the quays for those who wish to see how they sailed in the XV century.
There is a lovely prom in Bayona it is about 4km long. The old part of the town is also of interest the streets are narrow and cobbled. The “Forteleza de Monterreal” was a fort but has now been converted into a “Parador” (a state-run tourist hotel). From here one can get wonderful views of Vigo estuary and The Cíes islands.
Sotomayor Castle (Castillo de Sotomayor)
Sotomayor castle is 18kms from Pontevedra and 6kms from Vigo estuary. It was a fort dating back to X11 century it was extended in the XV century and is still quite well preserved.Visitors are allowed into the castle and also can walk in the beautiful and well-kept gardens.Entrance is by means of a drawbridge.
To get to the castle take the AP-9 motorway come off in Redondela and then continue on to Arcade. From here it is signposted.
