Vitoria
Vitoria is the capital of Álava and the Basque Country. This is a well kept city with many pedestrianised areas and a medieval quarter. Its eco awareness can be seen by the fact that bicycles can be borrowed to move around the town during the day. The city, being flat, encourages the use of bicycles.
While strolling through the old quarter, beautiful medieval buildings can be seen. They now house museums or administrative offices. Sta.Maria Cathedral is definitely a “must see”.
Florida park is in the centre of the city; a type of 19th century French style park, which influenced the development of parks in the northern Iberian Peninsula. The park has
ninety five different species of trees, a spectacular walnut tree, 30m high, takes pride of place. Access to the park is free. It is open all year, and at weekends during the summer there is music and dancing.
Salburua is situated to the north east of Vitoria, it is a wetland environment which forms part of the green belt around the city and turns out to be a great place to go for walks there and escape from the busy streets .
